How recommendations work
Every rule the recommender follows, in plain English. Listeners can see why a track was picked; artists can see exactly how they get surfaced.
Nothing here can be bought. No artist, label or partner can pay to appear in a mix, a radio station, a shelf or a search result, and Boosts and subscription money never change what anyone is recommended.
What we learn from
- Your plays from the last 90 days. A play counts once it passes 30 seconds or 50% of the track, whichever comes first: the same rule that decides payouts.
- Your likes, the artists you follow and the playlists you make.
- The genres and moods artists tag their own music with.
- Never money: payments, Boosts and royalty rates are not inputs to the recommender.
How we decide two tracks are alike
- Co-listening: tracks played by the same listeners are neighbours. Each track keeps its 50 closest neighbours.
- Tags: tracks that share genres and moods are closer. This is how new artists with few plays still get found.
- Every recommendation carries a reason, such as “Because you played Slow Tide”, and it is shown next to the track.
Your mixes
- Discovery Mix: up to 30 tracks you have not played yet, closest to your taste. Rebuilt every Monday.
- Daily Mixes: up to three, one per corner of your listening (for example Lo-fi or Folk), up to 25 tracks each, mixing favourites with neighbours. Rebuilt every day.
- Release Radar: new releases from the last 28 days by artists you follow or play. Rebuilt every Friday.
- Radio: starts from one track or one artist and follows the same neighbours. It skips anything you have excluded.
You are in control
- “Exclude from my recommendations” on any track, artist, release or playlist keeps it out of every mix, radio and shelf. Undo it any time in Settings → Taste.
- Excluding a playlist also stops its tracks being used to learn your taste.
- Personalised recommendations can be switched off with one switch in Settings. Then you see the same shelves as everyone else.
For artists: how do I get on Discovery Mix?
- Tag your tracks with honest genres and moods. Tags are how your music meets listeners who have never heard of you.
- Get played by people who play similar music: shows, shares and playlists all help, and every listener counts the same.
- There is no fee, no promotion tier and no “discovery mode” trade for a lower royalty. Your royalty rate never changes what we recommend.
Same inputs, same result
- The recommender is deterministic: the same listening history and catalogue always produce the same mixes, so results can be checked and explained.
